Celebrate National Open the Magic Day

Let’s Open the Magic!

Is there anything worse than having a student in your class feel so alone because they hate reading? Is there anything worse than a 5th grader sitting on the bed crying because they can read like their peers?

I get it…. This was me. I was a fifth grader who hated reading because I would stutter down the page and not understand what I was reading more than half the time.

It can be really lonely when your friends are reading above grade level and you are in the corner reading a book two grade levels below and still struggling to understand the story.

Let me share with you, that little girl in the corner graduated college with honors, has a masters in reading education, won Teacher of the Year, teaches 5th grade, and LOVES picture books and to read novels on the couch.

I created National Open The Magic Day to celebrate read alouds, picture books, the love of reading, and students who struggle to find their reading voice. Every year on September 25th, teachers and parents worldwide read a picture book (or many!) to celebrate Opening the Magic. The day reminds us that picture books are for everyone and allows them to have a confetti moment!

This year the picture book I selected is The Curious Why by Angela DiTerlizzi and illustrated by Lorena Alvarez Gomez. This delightful picture book explores the boundless curiosity of young children. The story follows a little girl who constantly asks “why” about everything she encounters in the world around her. Each page is filled with wonder and discovery, encouraging young readers to embrace their inquisitive nature and seek answers to their many questions. The book celebrates the joy of curiosity and the endless quest for knowledge, making it a perfect read for curious minds.

I read this book to my students last year and I knew the moment I turned the last page this gem would be the National Open The Magic Day book.

Let’s OPEN THE MAGIC and see how you can participate in this special day.
