<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Upper elementary kids are <em>feeling</em> all the feelings, they just might not always know what to do with them yet. That’s where the magic of a good picture book comes in. In just a few pages, it can transport students into someone else’s world, give them a peek at another perspective, and spark those “Ohhh… I never thought about it like that” moments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best part? These books do the heavy lifting and you just get to enjoy the read-aloud and guide the conversation.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are five picture books that are big on heart, rich in discussion potential, and guaranteed to grow your class’s empathy muscles. Plus I’ve included a quick sentence stem for each to help you kick off those deeper talks.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-books-that-build-empathy-Card-Square-1-1024x1024.png" alt="" class="wp-image-10105023" style="width:400px" srcset="https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-books-that-build-empathy-Card-Square-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-books-that-build-empathy-Card-Square-1-300x300.png 300w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-books-that-build-empathy-Card-Square-1-150x150.png 150w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-books-that-build-empathy-Card-Square-1-768x768.png 768w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-books-that-build-empathy-Card-Square-1.png 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>The Boy and the Whale</em> by Hideko Takahashi</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://amzn.to/45TnL4Y">This gentle, poetic story</a> beautifully highlights connection and kindness that transcend language and cultural differences, making it a perfect choice for teaching students that empathy knows no boundaries and is something we all share as humans.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Conversation Starter:</strong> “When I meet someone new or different, one way I can show kindness is…”</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>The Year We Learned to Fly</em> by Jacqueline Woodson</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://amzn.to/45R8rWq">This uplifting story</a> follows two siblings who discover the power of imagination to rise above challenges. It encourages readers to understand others’ struggles and recognize the strength it takes to keep going. This picture book helps students see that everyone faces hard times, and sometimes all it takes is a little support and hope to soar together.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Conversation Starter: </strong>“When I face a tough day, one thing that helps me is…”</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>I Walk with Vanessa: A Story About a Simple Act of Kindness</em> by Kerascoët</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Without any words, <a href="https://amzn.to/3JggHGR">this beautifully illustrated book </a>tells the story of a girl standing up for a bullied classmate and how kindness spreads through a community. It shows how one small act of courage and kindness can create a ripple effect, inspiring students to think about their own power to make a difference.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Conversation Starter:</strong> “One small way I can stand up for someone else is…”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/IMG_4700-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-10105055" style="width:400px" srcset="https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/IMG_4700-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/IMG_4700-225x300.jpg 225w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/IMG_4700-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/IMG_4700.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>The Invisible String</em> by Patrice Karst</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://amzn.to/46Zvm2X">A beautiful story </a>about the unseen connections that tie people together, showing how love and empathy keep us connected no matter where we are. It reminds students that even when we can’t see it, we are all linked through care and understanding, fostering a sense of belonging.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Conversation Starter:</strong> “Someone I feel connected to even when we’re apart is…”</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>A Different Pond</em> by Bao Phi, illustrated by Thi Bui</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://amzn.to/46YqACX">This heartfelt story</a> follows a young boy and his father fishing early in the morning, sharing memories and dreams despite the challenges they face as immigrants. It beautifully captures family bonds, sacrifice, and understanding. It invites students to appreciate different family experiences and the quiet strength found in love and resilience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Conversation Starter:</strong> “A story from my family that I think others should hear is…”</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Empathy is more than a buzzword, it’s a vital skill that helps our students grow into thoughtful, compassionate humans. Picture books like these hidden gems open doors for meaningful conversations that stay with kids long after the last page is turned.</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By weaving these stories and sentence starters into your classroom routine, you’re not only nurturing empathy, you’re building a community where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. And that’s a lesson worth teaching every single day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want even more great read-alouds, be sure to explore my collection of<a href="https://www.amazon.com/shop/ramonarecommends/list/1HUKQPW4SWDTQ?linkCode=sl2&amp;tag=onamzramonrec-20&amp;ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_s_ons_mixed_d"> SEL picture books</a> ideal for the classroom. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">You know that magical moment when the dinner table <em>finally</em> settles, and everyone’s chewing quietly and you dare to ask, “So… how was your day?” only to be met with the classic “fine”? Yep, we’ve all been there. But what if you could swap out small talk for real talk—the kind that gets your kids opening up, sharing feelings, and maybe even asking <em>you</em> the big questions?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Enter: picture books.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ve always believed that stories are secret doorways into the hearts and minds of kids and reading them together creates the perfect launchpad for meaningful, memory-making conversations. One parenting gem that’s helped me embrace these chats is<a href="https://amzn.to/45sDxCr"> <em>How to Talk So Kids Will Listen &amp; Listen So Kids Will Talk</em></a>—a must-read that reminds us just how powerful it is when we <em>really</em> listen to our kids.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So if you’re craving more connection and less “pass the ketchup,” these five picture books are here to help. They’re heartfelt, thought-provoking, and just the right spark to turn dinner into a nightly tradition of curiosity, laughter, and deeper conversations.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-bookS-thAT-SPArK-Books-Card-Square-1024x1024.png" alt="" class="wp-image-10105015" style="width:400px" srcset="https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-bookS-thAT-SPArK-Books-Card-Square-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-bookS-thAT-SPArK-Books-Card-Square-300x300.png 300w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-bookS-thAT-SPArK-Books-Card-Square-150x150.png 150w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-bookS-thAT-SPArK-Books-Card-Square-768x768.png 768w, https://ramonarecommends.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/5-bookS-thAT-SPArK-Books-Card-Square.png 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

It opens the door to conversations about how we process sadness, how we comfort others, and what <em>we</em> need when we&#8217;re feeling down.<br><strong>Dinner table talk:</strong> “Has there been a time when you just wanted someone to listen? What helps you feel better when you’re upset?”</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. </strong><strong><em>The Day You Begin</em></strong><strong> by Jacqueline Woodson &amp; Rafael López</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why it sparks conversation:<br></strong>This <a href="https://amzn.to/45vD16E">beautiful book</a> honors the courage it takes to share your story, especially when you feel different. It opens space to talk about identity, belonging, and celebrating what makes us unique.<strong><br>Dinner table talk: </strong>“Have you ever felt different from everyone else? <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. </strong><strong><em>What If Everybody Did That?</em></strong><strong> by Ellen Javernick</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why it sparks conversation:<br></strong>This <a href="https://amzn.to/3UoL5B7">fun, thought-provoking book</a> shows how everyday choices impact others. It opens the door to talking about empathy, inclusion, and noticing others who might be left out.<br><strong>Dinner table talk:</strong> “Have you ever felt invisible? What’s one thing we can do this week to help someone feel seen or included?”</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Who knew peas, pasta, and picture books could lead to the best conversations of the day? Next time the table goes quiet, skip the “how was your day” routine and grab a story instead. Because when kids start talking, and you’re really listening… that’s the <em>real</em> magic on the menu.&nbsp;</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Bonus Tip for Parents</strong><br>Want deeper conversations without the dinner-table interrogation? Pair these read-alouds with open-ended questions that <em>invite</em> your kids to share rather than quiz them. Remember the wisdom from <a href="https://amzn.to/45sDxCr"><em>How to Talk So Kids Will Listen &amp; Listen So Kids Will Talk</em>:</a> kids open up when they feel heard—not hurried.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s something extra special about sharing a picture book that makes your students pause, smile, and say, “That reminds me of <em>my</em> family!” Whether it’s a sweet grandma, a brave big sister, or a quiet moment between a parent and child, picture books about families help our students feel seen and build connections in our classrooms.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even in upper elementary, picture books are still powerful tools. They open doors to deep conversations, inspire thoughtful writing, and spark joy (sometimes even a few tears!).
