Does your teacher-brain feel like it’s officially reached “storage closet” status? You’re likely surrounded by half-packed boxes, stray crayons, and students who have one foot out the door. It’s that bittersweet transition from the classroom to the coast. You want to finish the year strong, but let’s be real: your creative tank is running on iced coffee and summer dreams. That is why I’ve curated the best June and July picture books for the classroom to help you “Open the Magic” one last time and keep your students reading all summer long!

In Room 35, I use these final weeks to soak up every last Confetti Moment. Whether we are reflecting on our growth or prepping for summer adventures, picture books remain the heartbeat of our community. My goal is to help you find the right book stack to bridge the gap between the last bell and the first day of summer.

If you love… staying ahead of the summer slide?

You are the teacher who wants to keep engagement high until the very last second. These calendars are pre-planned with kid-friendly celebrations like National Cheese Day (June 4) and National Shark Awareness Day (July 14). Each day features a fun fact and a digital read-aloud link. You can also get the June National Days booklist and the July list as well! These feature great books to read but you miss out on the interactive extras to display.

Kids will giggle through every page while parents smile at Olivia’s determination and creativity. This book is perfect for launching conversations about independence and the joyful chaos of celebration.

Anticipation and Excitement: The Night Before the 4th of July

☀️ A Slow Summer, A Sweet Memory

I love a slow summer. You know the kind: early morning workouts, breakfast on the patio, and long afternoons stretched out by the pool with a good book in hand. That’s my kind of joy.

Growing up, one of my favorite summer traditions was going to the library with my mom. We turned it into a full-day event. We’d scan the shelves for new books, chat with the librarian, and, of course, enjoy our signature lunch—tuna fish sandwiches and tortilla chips. It’s a core memory that still makes me smile.

📉 What Is the Summer Slide?

And no, I don’t mean the scorching metal slide at your local park that burns the backs of your thighs. The summer slide I’m talking about is a sneaky one—learning loss that can happen over the summer when kids aren’t engaged in reading, writing, and math.

🚨 The Bad News

Research shows many students lose essential skills over the summer break. In fact, reading fluency and comprehension often take a dip when kids don’t read regularly. It’s like any skill—if you don’t practice it, you lose it. When fall arrives, teachers spend valuable time reviewing rather than diving into new learning.

🌞 The Good News

The summer slide is preventable. Just 15–20 minutes of daily reading, trips to the library, fun math games, cooking together, or nature walks can make all the difference. Learning doesn’t have to stop when school does—it just needs to look a little different.

🎉 The GREAT News

You don’t have to plan a thing—I’ve got two magical resources to make your summer both educational and joyful.

🌻 Sunshine Book Camp
